Most percentage calculators make you pick a mode first. That is backwards: people usually arrive knowing their two numbers but not the name of the operation. Showing all three removes a decision you should not have to make.
How the calculations work
A% of B = (A / 100) × B
A is what % of B = (A / B) × 100
Change A to B = ((B − A) / |A|) × 100
All three use the same two inputs and give different answers, which is exactly why they get confused.
A worked example
Take A = 40 and B = 52.

Four different answers from the same two numbers. If sales rose from 40 to 52 units, the useful figure is the 30 percent increase. If 40 of 52 seats are taken, it is the 76.92 percent occupancy. Reaching for the wrong one is the most common percentage error there is.
The three things worth actually understanding
A 50% fall is not undone by a 50% rise
This is the most important asymmetry in percentages, and it costs people real money.
Start at 100. Fall 50 percent and you have 50. Now rise 50 percent — from 50, not from 100 — and you have 75. You are still down a quarter.
Recovering from a 50 percent loss requires a 100 percent gain. A 20 percent loss needs a 25 percent gain; an 80 percent loss needs 400 percent. Each percentage refers to whatever the current base is, and after a fall that base is smaller.
Percentage points are not percentages
If an interest rate moves from 4 percent to 6 percent, that is a rise of 2 percentage points but a 50 percent increase. Both are true and they describe different things. Whichever sounds more dramatic tends to be the one reported.
To reverse a percentage change, divide
If a price is $120 after a 20 percent increase, the original was not $120 − 20% = $96. It was:
120 / 1.20 = 100
The same logic removes sales tax from a total, or finds the original price from a sale price. Subtracting the percentage uses the wrong base and is always wrong, by an amount that grows with the percentage.
Common mistakes to avoid
Averaging percentages. A 10 percent gain followed by a 10 percent loss is not break-even; it is a 1 percent loss. Percentages compound, so they cannot be averaged like ordinary numbers.
Adding stacked discounts. Thirty percent off followed by an extra 20 percent off is 44 percent off, not 50. The second discount applies to the reduced price.
Reporting percentage change from a very small base. Going from 2 to 6 is a 200 percent increase and also just four more. Percentage change from a tiny starting number is technically correct and usually misleading.
Dividing by the wrong number. “A is what percent of B” divides by B. Reversing it gives a plausible-looking answer that is wrong — 40 of 52 is 76.9 percent, while 52 of 40 is 130 percent.
Edge cases this calculator handles
Change from zero is undefined. Any increase from nothing is infinite in percentage terms, so the calculator shows a dash rather than a made-up number. Report the absolute change instead.
A percentage of zero is undefined for the same reason — you cannot express a number as a share of nothing.
Negative numbers use the absolute base. A move from −50 to −25 reads as a 50 percent improvement, not a 50 percent decline, which is almost always what is meant when discussing losses shrinking.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
